Foot In Facebook of the Day: Troy, Michigan’s newly elected mayor Janice Daniels is already facing calls to resign in light of a Facebook status update she posted back in June, denouncing New York for allowing same-sex couples to marry.
“I think I am going to throw away my I Love New York carrying bag now that queers can get married there,” Daniels wrote in the post recently uncovered by the blog Keep Troy Strong.
Asked to comment, Daniels told MLive.com her use of the word “queer” was a mistake, but she stands by the update’s message. “I probably shouldn’t have used that kind of language,” she said, “but I do believe marriage should be between one man and one woman.”
Troy High School students plan to protest outside City Hall tonight in an effort to persuade Mayor Daniels to step down.
“It’s important to stress that this is meant to be completely peaceful and respectful,” reads an announcement on the protest’s Facebook page. “We aren’t showing up at City Hall to take over the building, we’re showing up to demonstrate that bigotry is not a true representation of Troy.”
Equality Michigan, noting that Daniels was “entitled to her own free speech,” still took offense to her use of the word queer and called for a public apology.
Daniels, meanwhile, wanted to make it clear that her issue was with same-sex marriage, not with the people getting married. “I love all people,” she said, adding that, “BTW, I am still carrying my I Love New York bag.” Phew.
so much i could say but i won’t say a thing.
